Description
It is evening on a cold day outside, but inside it is warm, with a glowing fire adding light and warmth to the room. The cat is at Santa’s feet, ready to jump in his lap, and Santa himself sits in a comfortable chair with a cookie.
It is the perfect time and place to read through the long scroll of the Christmas List, and Santa is doing so with pleasure as aplomb – which is pretty much how Santa always does things – with pleasure and aplomb.
Think about it: do you ever see Santa in a rush? Is he ever tearing out his hair as he wildly texts on the phone, digitally shouting to his elves to up the production schedule because they are behind, yet again? (Given the scope of what Santa does, it is surprising that he and his elves are not in a constant stage of being behind schedule.)
But no, we do not see Santa like this, and the artwork, The Christmas List gives us an inkling into this famous jolly elf’s character: he is not a Type A personality; he is a Type U – for unique – or Type S – for Santa – personality, and that personality takes time to enjoy the small, simple things of life, like eating a cookie while sitting in a chair in a warm room on a cold night.
This ability to stop and enjoy the simple things is the reason Santa gets things done, and gets them done with his Santa aplomb and flair: he does what he can, when he can and how he can. Obviously, Santa has some supernatural powers unavailable to the rest of us, but his attitude of geniality is one that we can adopt, supernatural powers or not:
We do what we can, when we can and how we can. And it’s very important to take time out to sit in the chair, with a book and a cookie, and wait for the cat to jump into our lap.
