Description
Life is as simple as a hairpin, and as complex as our deepest spiritual thoughts.
In the black and white charcoal painting, The Hairpin, a young woman sits in her boudoir, running her hands gently through her hair as she thinks, and reflects, and wonders.
How many of us do that, quite naturally – run our hands through our hair, gently rub our temple, as a means of comforting ourselves? There is something about the human touch that is powerful and strong, whether that touch comes from our own hands gently running through our hair, or whether we rub the head of a baby that we’re holding in our lap – the human touch is a vital element to life, and like most vital elements, we don’t see it as such, because we are trained to put value only on things we can buy – like cars, or diamonds, or an evening in a posh hotel.
And while there’s nothing wrong with a nice car or an evening in a posh hotel (quite honestly, it’s hard to find much value in cold, clear rocks that only have the value they do because their supply is artificially limited by the companies that mine and sell them), we do ourselves a disservice when we chase after these things, experiencing a sense of discontent if we do not have them.
What matters, what is truly significant, what is of deep intrinsic value, we already have, literally, at our fingertips – the human touch, and the ability to listen to others, to laugh with them, to be with them and love them because they are ours and they matter. There is no price placed on this, and despite the propaganda of the credit card companies (“It’s priceless!”), what truly matters is something that we cannot pay for with a charge card.
