Description
The Palouse Falls of Southeast Washington State, in the United States, are a place like no others. A cascading waterfall makes a sheer drop down the cliffs to the pool below, with a thunderous sound to accompany the glorious site.
A state park, Palouse Falls is not necessarily easily accessible. Although a road leads up to it, the way is not all paved, and small cars find themselves bumping along the dry field country of Southeast Washington. For the longest time, it looks like nothing will happen, and the landscape will not change, but then the visitor arrives.
You park, you walk a little, and then you see it, seemingly coming out of nowhere.
The artwork, Thundercloud over Palouse Falls, invites the visitor to see this splendid landscape on a stormy day, one in which the weather portends to be rainy, but isn’t quite there yet. The colors are rich and vibrant, reflecting the twilight colors that play across the clouds and the landscape of this area.
The movement of the clouds forms almost a dance, in conjunction with the movement of the water below. This is an inspiring place, a magical place, a majestic place, an awesome place in every correct sense of the word.
Depending upon the season, the water falling from the cliffs at Palouse Falls changes in quantity and intensity, with the grandest show being in the spring when the snow run-off makes its way down the river and to the pool before. But at any time of the year, Palouse Falls is a place worth taking time to get to, and to spend time in.
And while nobody wants to hang around and be stuck in a potential storm, thunderclouds over the Palouse – with the light and color and intensity that they impart to the landscape – are worth seeing indeed.
