Description
The beach is a place where nothing stays the same for long. With every tide that goes in or out, treasures are deposited on the sand, or taken far out into the surf.
That’s what makes beachcombing so delightful. One afternoon, one may find nothing – “Everyone’s already been here before me, and taken the good stuff” – but only hours later one can find something that no beachcomber has seen before, because it wasn’t there before. It only just arrived.
The artwork, Washed Ashore, celebrates this sense of discovery and surprise, inviting the viewer into an enclave of the beach, next to a grand, imposing rock. (That one won’t be moving anywhere anytime soon.)
A tangled cluster of kelp nests in the sand, intertwined like knotted yarn. Of course, the first temptation of any child of any age is to stomp on the kelp’s bulbous end and hear it pop. And then, one can grab an end of the giant seaweed and run with it through the sand, leaving a line of tracks. It’s like a kite, one that flies on the ground.
Such is the beach, a playground like no other. All the while that one is discovering new and unusual treasures, the soft whisper of the surf forms a background noise, a hypnotic, rhythmic sound entering so quietly into our consciousness that we hardly know it is there.
And these treasures? They’re not semi-precious stones, nor glistening gold, nor long-lost pirate booty that somehow escaped from its watery home. They are often “just” shells, sometimes intact, sometimes not, or driftwood of a most unusual shape, a quivering remains of jellyfish, or an agate that glistens and twinkles and catches our eye.
No, these things aren’t valuable in the sense that they fetch high prices at auctions. But they are valuable because they are part of the sea, part of the magic of the coast where the treasures we find ashore inspire us to wonder about the vast, majestic ocean.
(The image Washed Ashore takes place on one of the many beautiful beaches of the Oregon Coast, USA.)
Washed Ashore is featured in 28 Fine Art America groups.
