Description
Childhood should be an idyllic time of play, exploration, imagination, creativity, and adventure.
It isn’t always so, we recognize as adults. But we know that it should be, and for that reason, when we see the exuberant innocence of a child, we smile, our hearts gladdened by something that is good and right and true. Children remind us that the world is a much bigger, and more beautiful, place than we think.
The artwork, Wild Child, captures this exuberance, this innocence, this joy and exploration and adventure as a little girl races up the path from the sea to her home, a bright piece of blue cloth waving happily in the breeze behind her.
Did she find the cloth on the beach, and she is running to the ones who love her in the house to tell them about her treasure? Or did she snatch the cloth, earlier, off the outside clothesline, and she has been pretending to be a mighty, beautiful queen of the ocean with it?
Her story is one that the viewer is invited to create and be a part of, as he or she is encouraged to join the child on the path in that mad race to the house. Do you remember times like this? Times when your intent was so strong in your mind, your purpose so clear, your joy so bright, that nothing else mattered? As you ran, you literally flew, wings on your feet like those on the feet of the child.
Wild Child is an encouragement to us that these do not have to be times of the past, all our childlike wonder squashed by the cares of the adult world’s anxieties and obligations. Somewhere within all of us is still the innocence and heart of a child – a wild child – and we need only fly down the path to adventure and hope.
(The setting for Wild Child is the historic Hughes House on the Oregon Coast.)
