Description
Rugged, craggy, silent, majestic.
The Wind River Mountain Range, located in the Bridger Wilderness area of western Wyoming, is a place full of glaciers, mountain peaks, lakes, meadows, alpine forests. People come here because they want to escape the sounds and scenes of the city, to be in a place where mountains, not skyscrapers and insurance buildings, command.
With greater than 2 million acres, the range extends for 80 miles along the Continental Divide. More than 40 of its named peaks top 13,000 feet. There is space here to breathe, hike, camp, experience, but – as with many spots that multitudes discover – you have to be willing to hike further, walk more, and seek out paths that others pass by if you want to avoid the crowds. After all, if enough people congregate in a small space, even a wilderness can start to seem like a city.
The artwork, Wind River Wilderness, takes you, the viewer, up a steep path to a high alpine lake, pristinely blue and quietly still. Trees along the banks and scattered among the boulders stand tall and straight, like sentinels guarding an outdoor palace of great beauty and calm.
There is no pomp here, no artificial splendor of jeweled crowns and royal personages parading about in velvet robes. There are rocks and trees, bushes and patches of grass, all surrounded by mountain peaks embedded with snow. Overhead, white clouds in a blue, blue sky traverse lazily across, and the air is crisp, cool, clear. The word “refreshing” comes to mind, and it has nothing to do with a soft drink.
It feels good to be outside, far away from TVs and video streaming, surveillance cameras and your neighbors’ intrusive doorbells that track your every mood as you walk the dog. Have a seat on one of the boulders, and drink in the calm.
