Description
While many of us remember hours of dreaming and daydreaming as children (perhaps it has to do with all those hours sitting at a school desk) we indulge in this activity less and less as adults. Admittedly, much of what we do during the day requires all or most of our attention, and allowing our minds to wander elsewhere isn’t always appropriate for the time and place.
(The woods in the background of the painting are from the beautiful Pacific Northwest, USA, where there are many places to be that are quiet and peaceful.)
But there are times when it is appropriate, and rather than pull out our phone so we can scroll through social media, perhaps we would find the time better spent on a gentle stroll – both mental and physical – allowing our thoughts to perambulate through a landscape of beauty and quiet.
The artwork, Woodland Dreams, invites us to do just that, stepping into the world of the woman with the parasol. This is a tranquil place, this grove of trees and foliage, and there is no hurry whatsoever to rush through it.
A gentle – but serious – smile on the woman’s face reflects the direction of her thoughts – they are deep and pensive, contemplative. Perhaps she is thinking of someone she loves – thoughts like these do indeed bring a glow to our face and heart. Perhaps she is dwelling on a memory that settles gently within her soul, calling her back to a time of warmth and goodness, surrounded by those who care for her, and for whom she cares.
There is a lean to her stance that gives us a sense of longing, almost an ache, because the emotions are so strong. Does she miss someone? Is she waiting for someone?
It is the people in our lives who engender such feelings, who cause us to stop and think, to hope and wonder, to dearly and deeply love. These dreams, these daydreams, have nothing to do with being a rock star at the head of a stage, but everything to do with the most meaningful relationships in our lives.
(The background forest for Woodland Dreams is from the Pacific Northwest woods in Washington State, and area where there is space to think and dream.)
