Often, when we see mist, we’re looking up – up at the mountain peaks, covered by a layer of clouds.
But in the Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA, when we see mist, we’re often looking down – down into the depths of the canyon, its details occluded by distance and atmosphere, not to mention the shape and form of the rocks and cliffs themselves, “getting in our way,” and keeping us from seeing the whole picture.
The artwork, Mist in the Canyon, invites the viewer to stop at the edge of the canyon. It is late afternoon, early evening, and twilight’s sun dances and glances across the surface of the cliffs, adding a warm glow to the coolness of dusk.
In the distance, toward the horizon, a layer of mist settles over a portion of the canyon. We’re not quite sure whether this mist is rising, ready to dissipate into the air, or whether it is slowly descending, filling the cracks and crevices of the landscape, hiding from our eyes the many fine and changing detail...
I am a fine art painter who creates representational images celebrating light, life, and color. A commercial illustrator for more than 20 years, I have been painting for most of my life, and in the last 13 years have focused exclusively on fine art. I celebrate images that invite the viewer to step into the artwork and experience a sense of joy, peace, freedom, encouragement, meditation, and thought. There's a lot of angry art out there, as well as a lot of shallow pop. I choose to use the abilities and experience I have to promote beauty and goodness.
