Description
Warm, sunny, colorful and bright – when someone says, “Italy,” those are the words that come to mind.
And that’s what you see at the little cove, Cala Port’Alga, a couple kilometers south of Polignano a Mare in the province of Puglia Italy.
Tucked away in a quiet enclave, the cove is a secret swimming spot that isn’t so secret to the locals. A series of steps and stones lead down to where you can wade into the water of the Adriatic Sea; on the way down to the banks there is a little free library in the shape of a boat.
And then there are the fishing boats, dry docked and ready to head out for the day. Green, pink, yellow, blue – they festoon the area with their color, so happy and joyful that it’s easy to forget that these are working boats. But the work, though it is not easy, is not unpleasant because the sun is rich and golden; the sea, at least on this day, is gentle; and the surroundings are beautiful.
But the boats are not always at work, nor are those in them. Sometimes it’s time to just get out on the water and float, bobbing gently on the waves, relishing the cool breeze. You can spend hours this way, and people do.
As individual as their owners, no one boat is the twin of another. Their panoply of color stands out against the white stone of the buildings, the stairway, and the cobblestone walk. Bright and happy, this place can’t help but make you feel bright and happy as well.
The artwork, Colorful Boats by the Sea, invites you to clamber down the steps to the harbor, kick off your shoes, and, if you remembered to put on your swim suit, doff the shirt and shorts and immerse yourself in the waters of the Adriatic, under the blue skies of the Mediterranean.
