Description
In the wilderness, the quiet is so profound that it sings its own song.
Cantata, the artwork, celebrates this song with a variety of elements – trees leaning over and casting their reflection upon a still pool, which also captures the color of the blue sky above. Rocks on the bank tumble down onto the shoreline, and in the background, granite cliffs gleam white in the high alpine air.
It is indeed a cantata, which in the musical world is a work created for voices – solo and group – to orchestral and instrumental accompaniment. One can almost hear the voices’ soft chant, growing in crescendo with melody and harmony added, then the high, clear solo of the soprano singing into existence the joy and promise of spring.
Cantata invites the viewer to step into this wilderness landscape, and to step away – mentally – from the anxiety and noise of the office, from the busy-ness of daily demands, from the constant nagging of the smart phone. Cantata is a place of silence, peace, tranquility – a place where one can think, wonder, meditate, and dream – and without this thinking, wondering, meditating, and dreaming, how do we convince ourselves that we can fully be the beautiful human beings we were created to be?
We were never meant to be machines, never meant to be robots or automatons, and while, sadly, too many jobs today require nothing more of humans than that they perform the same task – mentally or physically – over and over again, our minds and spirits are too strong to bend to this demand. It is places like Cantata that remind us of the creative energy of the Creator of all things, the Creator who made (and loves) us as well, and has given us the means to do good, wonderful things.
Cantata invites us to join in the song, to raise our voices and sing the beauty of the world around us, of our lives, and of the human brothers and sisters with whom we share this planet.
