Description

The Grand Canyon in the Southwest's Arizona is a place of awe and wonder – one cannot stand at the rim before a great drop off and not feel a bit small, a bit silent, a bit still at the sheer majesty of rock and form and color before us.

In the artwork, Stillness, two Native American women stand in such silence. There is no need to speak, to observe aloud to each other how big everything is, to audibly wonder how such a natural beauty was formed and when. While there is nothing wrong with these questions and observations, Stillness reminds us that there is a time for just that – a profound time of quiet and silence in which we let the land before us speak, and we listen.

Stillness gives us the idea that these women have been to this spot before, and the sense of companionship between them is evident of their friendship, possibly sisterhood. Like all representational paintings that are created with thought and skill, Stillness invites the viewer to step into the image and join the women standing at the rim of the Canyon.

The colors, the form, the hue of the rocks before us give a sense of design and Designer, in much the same way that the women’s blankets were evidently created by skillful hands. Nature is a piece of artwork that is timeless in its scope, and while the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s more profound, more memorable places, all landscapes on the planet have something about them to incite a sense of silence, meditation, profundity, awe, and stillness.

Walk into the painting, Stillness, and join the two women at the rim. As you stand silently there, looking out into the depths, allow your mind to let go of the worries, anxieties, frustrations, and pressures of daily life, and simply bask in the silence.
