Description
It is that special time of evening – some call it the gloaming hour – when the sun is just about to set, yet its golden rays still shine into the clouds, and reflect upon the waters below.
Sailing on the Sound captures this moment of peace, quiet, and tranquility, and the viewer is invited to step into this place of silence and well being. The place is Puget Sound, an area of many waters and waterways, and the island around which the sailboat is sailing is Bainbridge Island.
Though one can catch a glimpse of lights from the houses on the shore, the true light in Sailing on the Sound comes from the sun itself, and the sky is lit up with golden, pulsating hues. Reflecting these hues like a mirror, the still waters of the sound are as colorful as the sky above. Gentle ripples from the sailboat add texture and very quiet, very calm movement to the painting.
Not that far away is the city of Seattle which, though it is a beautiful city, is not a place of deep quiet and meditation. There, as in any city, there is hustle, there is movement, there is a frenetic energy as people go about their lives of conducting business, raising families, and getting from one place to another on freeways that always seem to be full of cars.
What a contrast it is, then, to be on this sailboat in the midst of the Sound, slowly moving to . . . we really don’t know where the sailboat is moving to, but it’s a safe bet that there is no hurry to get there. Time on the water is a time of tranquility and joy, and Sailing on the Sound invites the viewer to step into the painting and join in that joy.
