Description
Water.
It’s such a part of our everyday life, so seemingly ordinary, that we forget how fascinating it is.
There is the sound that it makes, as a river or stream, as it flows over rocks and logs – steady and regular, and yet subtly different with each moment. One can sit on the banks and just listen, allowing the mind to flow calmly, easily, along with the current.
And then there is the way sunlight plays upon the surface – golden rays dancing while, in the shadows, the depths beckon. Even on a still, still lake there is movement, as gentle ripples catch the light, reflecting colors from the sky above and the trees and foliage growing on the banks alongside.
The artwork, Ripples, is a close up of a section of Ice Lake in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, USA. High in the alpine region, the lake is remote, reachable after a nine-mile hike up a winding trail. In this pristine landscape, the air is cool and crisp, the water clear and clean.
When the lake is still, it acts as a mirror, and appears to be smooth like glass across the surface. But when you sit at the banks and stare at just a small section of the water – as in Ripples – you see the soft, delicate movement. The water forms almost an abstract, a menage of color ranging from green and aqua and marine blue (a reflection of the sky) to browns and beiges, grays and violets, representing the rocky landscape below the surface.
It’s mesmerizing, watching the water, but it is a good form of mesmerization. Unlike the zombie trance state we enter while watching TV or scrolling through the screen, our mental process as we stare at water is calm and quiet, but very much alert. When we stare at water, we can deeply think, contemplate, wonder, question.
Water. It’s extraordinary.
