Description
Sailboats emanate a sense of calm, peace, and tranquility.
They move slowly and gracefully, lithesome dancers across the surface of the water, and they are never in a hurry. Even those boats with motors maintain a serene composure. One knows, when you see a sailboat, that it is not a warship, a vessel of aggression and enmity. You don’t have to be afraid when you see a sailboat, but rather, can stand on the shore and enjoy watching it tack and play, cruising with the wind or flowing in cooperation with an opposing breeze.
Along the coast of Polignano a Mare, Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, the sailboats are ever there to be seen and admired. Sometimes there is only one, breaking across the vast blueness of water, but moments later there can be a dozen, all gently heading somewhere in an easy, relaxing fashion.
The artwork, Sails along Rocky Shores, invites you to step out onto the rocky outcrop beach opposite the historic district of a beloved destination community on the eastern coast of Italy. To your right, just out of sight, is the famous Cala Porto/Lama Monachile beach. Across from you are the ancient and timeless buildings of Polignano a Mare. In front of you and to your left, filling the entire horizon, is the Adriatic Sea. Some days it sparkles blue like sapphire. Today, on a cloudy day, is shimmers silver.
Like the people on the boats, you are in no hurry. Despite the clouds the day is warm, the breeze crisp and invigorating, the rocks under your feet are big and flat, nature’s furniture upon which to sit and enjoy a day of sunbathing, reading, or eating the croissant you picked up at the little cafe on the way.
This is what peaceful feels like.
