Description
This particular road makes it fairly obvious as to where it is heading.
And while it isn’t necessarily a straight shot – there’s something about roads that insist upon winding and turning – the ribbon of highway in the high Colorado plateau landscape leads inexorably toward the majestic and mighty buttes of Monument Valley.
Located along the Utah-Arizona state lines, Monument Valley lies within the reservation of the Navajo Nation, the people of whom consider the area sacred. Its name in Navajo means “valley of the rocks,” and it is most aptly named.
The highest of the buttes rise, seemingly out of nowhere, to an elevation of 1,000 feet; the plateau itself is 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Blue sky over red rock and sand create a landscape that is other worldly, mystical, and oddly ethereal. Though the buttes are unmoving, substantial, and literally rock solid, they give the impression that they could just as easily disappear into the mist before you get there – and then, when you look about you in perplexed confusion, reappear.
The artwork, Road to Monument Valley, invites you to get in your car (it’s a long walk) and follow that ribbon of highway closer and closer to a landscape of majesty and strength. Though some of the rock formations look like towers in a castle, they are so much more than anything built by human hands. These have been created by time and weather, water and wind, over a period of eons that is beyond the scope of our individual, earthly walk.
They have outlasted, and will continue to outlast, any skyscraper, fortress, shopping center, kingdom, nation, or soap opera. A piece will chip off here, a boulder will tumble down there, but the monuments continue to remain . . . monumental.
