Description

Storm clouds billow above a rolling mountain range in Oregon's Wallowa Mountains. The sweeping panorama of nature challenges the afternoon walker to bring an umbrella and wear a warm coat.

Afternoon Storm invites the viewer to step into the landscape on this tumultuous day, and the panoramic sweep of the landscape prompts one to button up the coat, flop the hood over one’s head, and open out the umbrella.

The umbrella may be a problem, though. In a storm such as this, the wind will certainly pick up, and indeed, already is doing so, as we can see by the brushy clouds sweeping overhead. True to the nature of wind, and storms, the direction of the wind won’t stay in one place, and as the viewer walks forward, there is a high likelihood that the wind will catch the umbrella and try to push it inside out.

Such is nature – we call her a she because there is a strong sense of personality in all that she does.

The beauty of a representational painting like Afternoon Storm is that, though it invites us into the painting, we are not actually in that landscape, and we enjoy all the benefits of a good, active storm without actually having the rain hit our face, or the wind turn our umbrella inside out.

From the comfort of our armchair, with a mug of hot tea in our hands (Afternoon Storm makes a wonderful image on a coffee mug, and can be purchased at this site, ready for the next storm in our area), we gently look at the painting, reflecting on the storms in which we have been caught, and grateful for the warmth, quiet, and peace of our living room.

Art takes us places, without our having to walk out of our door. We simply have to invite the art into our homes.
