Description
There was a path. And then there wasn’t a path. It just . . . disappeared.
Anyone who enjoys hiking knows that there are all sorts of trails and paths. Some are well-marked, even paved, but these are generally found in heavy-use areas that visitors flock to for vacations and outings. In these popular spots, tourists abound, and regardless of how beautiful the surroundings are, one must share them with the hustle and bustle of people pushing past. If one is looking for silence and solitude, it is unlikely to be found on well-marked, paved paths.
And then there are the paths that are not well-marked, are most certainly not paved, and quite often wind in and out of visibility. Such is the situation with the path in the artwork, Coming Together on North Creek.
The landscape is in Zion National Park in Utah, USA. And while the popular national park is known for being, well, extremely popular (it gets some 4.5 million visitors per year) not all its environs are as well known, or crowded, as are its most familiar, visited trails.
The landscape of the artwork is in Zion National Park, but north of its main campus. Few come here, few walk the trail, few experience the silence and peaceful setting. At this particular spot, the trail – never well-marked or kept up in the first place – decided to go underground, or, more aptly, under water, since it’s probably someplace under the gentle current of the stream waters.
Not to panic. One isn’t lost, really, and there is the very real option of choosing one of the branches of the stream and following that: it will head gradually uphill, toward the cliffs in the distance. And all the while you are walking, the ripple of current whispers gently alongside you.
It's most definitely worth coming here, despite the eccentricity of the path. Or more likely, because of that eccentricity.
