When is the last time you felt exhilarated?
It is an awesome feeling, one that we don’t feel all the time, but one that we certainly should experience more regularly than we do.
Perhaps there has been an amazing piece of news. Or maybe you completed a task you had long been dreading, but through persistence and insistence, put behind you. Or, finding yourself in a place of beauty, you spontaneously FEEL the beauty, majesty, and wonder of your surroundings. The emotion bubbles forth from your soul like clear water from a mountain spring.
The woman in the artwork, Shadow Dancer is in a place and a time and a moment of exhilaration. Behind her, dramatic clouds swirl, brooding over the peaks of the mountains. There is a crackle in the air, that sense of electricity that portends a monumental storm.
But rather than run, she holds her arms out as she whirls and twists and spins in an impulsive dance of joyous exhilaration. There is so much energy – both in the weather around her and in her heart within her – that it demands its release through motion, movement, grace and a pulsation of life.
The soft folds of fabric that she wraps around her catch both the breeze and the glint of sunlight breaking through the clouds; her face captures both light and shadow. She is simultaneously lost in the moment as well as fully aware of her surroundings, and each step, each turn, each gesture flows smoothly and elegantly.
This, this is exhilaration – it is joy, it is abandon, it is freedom, it is fully immersing oneself in life’s mysteries. It is not cool, hip, trendy – one does not express exhilaration through boredom or the funny little symbolic gestures that movie and music stars make.
One expresses it through experiencing it, and when you experience it, it runs deep.
