Description
The waiting room of a medical clinic is not a relaxing place. Nor is an office cubicle. Nor schoolroom, parking lot, interior of an airport, or the aisles of a grocery store.
Places such as these, where we are accustomed to spend much time, give back little to our souls and hearts. Regardless of how sumptuous the interior decoration (which generally isn’t the case at all), there is little in these spaces of freedom, majesty, beauty, magnificence, splendor or joy. There are chairs, desks, indoor/outdoor carpets, practical items that do not invite us to something bigger, grander, better. Only if there is art on the walls do our minds and hearts have opportunity to enter into a state of higher contemplation, unless the art is the kind that is there simply because it matches the colors on the rug.
But there is a place, there are places, where we can find the deeper, better, wiser things. Out in nature there are no cheap plastic chairs, inane magazines with celebrity photos on the cover, three-quarter cubicle walls covered with grey carpet, mindless music piped through the building’s speakers. In nature there are massive mountains, stately trees, gigantic boulders, wispy wildflowers, slow-flowing streams that reflect the sunlight and clouds in the sky above. Its sounds are intriguing, interesting, provocative: the complicated song of a bird, the whisper of the water over the rocks, the amazingly loud – and persistent – chirrup of the cricket.
We find ourselves alert, engaged and creative, while at the same time we feel calm, thoughtful, pensive and still.
This is the world that the artwork, Mountain Refuge, invites us to step into. It’s a big world, a grand world, a world that does not box us in with walls, or trap us behind desks, or frighten us with a cold, clinical attitude. It is a timeless world, one made for humans to explore, reach into, and live.
Let us, then . . . live.
