Description
Too often, we associate the word “majestic” with earthly kings – ordinary human beings who push themselves forward as something extra special because they wear ribbons and medals, capes and crowns. Their bank accounts are large because their hands are heavy.
But true majesty, the type that makes you stop in awe and wonder, is reserved for something powerful and immovable, timeless and mighty – the mountains and the sea, the creations of nature and the divine hand who holds that.
Perhaps this is why the Valley of the Gods is thusly name: it is a place of grand, rocky buttes that seemingly rise from nowhere, bursting from the earth and reaching for the sky, towering over the desert landscape at their feet.
These were not built by human hands, commanded into existence by kingly decree, built by slaves to feed a man’s ego. They are simply there; we don’t know how, although we can theorize, speculate, and pontificate. The Science tells us one thing one day, another thing the next, but somehow manages to extract the wonder from it all. If we let it.
The artwork, Red Monument, invites you to this Valley of the Kings, to a body of still, quiet water that captures the reflection of a grand edifice, a castle that belongs to no man but the earth itself.
Unbudging, rooted to the ground, this butte does not flit and flutter about, creating this law and that, demanding the worship of its subjects. Rather, it stands with confidence and strength, casting its shadow over the water, creating a temporary oasis of shade and coolness in a sere, harsh landscape.
No human being is a rock of strength like this one. But really, do we really want, would we ever really need, such a human king?
