Description
What color is the Grand Canyon?
“Well, it must be red, because it’s in the Southwest USA, red rock country, right? Just like the ocean is blue.”
But the ocean isn’t “just” blue. Nor is the Grand Canyon “just” red.
Light and shadow dance across the surface of the rocks, drawing out unimaginable blues and lavenders, purples and pinks, glowing golds, brooding charcoals, along with the reds and oranges, coppers and vermilion, russets and rust that make the landscapes of red rock country so striking.
It’s never the same, certainly not predictable, and unable to be boxed in and classified as just this color or that. Nature doesn’t worry about what she “should” do or be, but rather, does what she does and is who she is. Maybe that’s why she’s so interesting, compelling, creative, and beautiful.
And at the Grand Canyon, she is polychromatic – multicolored, and not only that, but changing and ephemeral in her choices, depending upon the time of day, the season, the diffusion of light, clouds in the sky, and a variety of other factors that affect what we see and how.
In the artwork, Polychromatic Canyon, we are standing at the edge of the Arizona icon. It is late afternoon, early evening, and the last light of the day’s sun glances across the surface of the cliffs and rock faces. Much is in shadow, preparing for night, and those shadows are not “just” black the way they’re “supposed” to be, but rather, a meditative green mingled with gray, while further in the distance, a pensive lavender prevails.
Where the sun still touches there are corals, beiges, sandstones and creams. Just a few minutes ago, the colors were different. Just a few minutes from now, they will segue into a new palette of hues.
But for now, it is what it is, and we are here, and here is calm and quiet, peaceful and serene.
