Description
Where do you go when you need to think – to deeply, intently, and profoundly think?
Different people people seek out different places, in accordance with their circumstances and preferences. And while those places vary – the beach, the bathroom, a mountain lake, the back yard – it’s likely that they will share one common denominator: the place sought will be quiet, free from distractions.
After all, what kind of deep, intent, profound, focused, serious thinking is ever done in front of a TV screen?
The artwork, Alpine Stream, invites the viewer into one of these quiet, calm places. Set in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, USA, the painting is a vertical vignette of a much, much larger landscape. A quiet stream flows gently at our feet. When we follow it with our eyes, it directs us upward, inward, toward the mountains in the distance.
It is a scene of timelessness, and there is comfort in that timelessness. Whether we are here or not, the mountains are, the stream is, the trees quietly grow year by year from sapling to towering sentinels. Hidden in the undergrowth, small animals scurry about their daily living, totally unaware of and completely unconcerned about the “issues” that the actors who read off of teleprompters impart to a fearful, anxious public.
This is no place for politics, propaganda, slick commercials, official pronouncements, shaking heads and scolding fingers. This is a place for thinking.
Our thinking. Our thoughts. Our questions. Our wondering. Our imagining.
And the more we do this thinking, questioning, wondering, imagining, the further we move away from the directed narrative that streams through our electronic devices and through our brains, and the closer we move to the deep potential we all have within us to create, be, and live as free human beings.
Step into the world of Alpine Stream. Listen to the sound of the water. Take a deep, deep breath, maybe even lift your arms up high and just feel your ability to stretch and move. And think.
It would be really really difficult to ever argue that too many people in the modern world spend too much time thinking.
