Description
When people hear the term, Pacific Northwest, they often think of trees and mountains, and oftentimes rain.
But the Pacific Northwest of the United States is a place of many landscapes – rolling farmlands, country meadows, and canyons, these latter often hidden in out of the way places and discovered, the people who find them think, by accident.
Such is the Pataha draw, located in an out of the way spot in Eastern Washington (not far from the little town of Starbuck, which possessed its name long before anyone thought of takeout coffee).
People drive by the the Pataha draw everyday without seeing it or being aware at all that it is there. You have to get out of the car and look for it, and when you do, you are rewarded with a place of beauty.
It’s not surprising that such beauty is hidden, found only with some effort and time – this is how life is, in many ways. As we hurry about from one place to another, our minds intent upon one task after another, we frequently pass by not only places, but people of great interest and beauty. But we don’t see this because we’re in such a hurry, and beautiful people, like beautiful places, often don’t shout out to us to stop and pay attention to them.
Like the Pataha, the beauty of many people is hidden, tucked away to be found only when we take the time and effort to do so. But the search is worth it: in the process of finding, and discovering, Pataha, the traveler steps away from the hurry and the demands for a few minutes, and simply listens to the gentle sound of the river below.
The highway, not far away, reminds us that life, in all its hurry and noise, is still going on, and soon, realistically, we will rejoin the hustle. But for now, there is no harm – and there is very much good – in simply being away for a few minutes, and enjoying the peace.
