Description
Because we are a busy people, a people driven – by corporations and media – to value productivity and efficiency over living and breathing – we have a tendency to move through our surroundings without looking at them.
We stride across the driveway into the car. We exit the car into the parking lot. We walk through the parking lot into the entrance of the building. From one place to another we pace, generally in a hurry, often with our minds on the tasks ahead, too frequently with our eyes paying no attention to our environs.
It is different when we are hiking, or rather, it should be. Out in the wilderness, surrounded by mountains and trees, lakes and rocks, the sounds of animals, birds, and insects, we are in no hurry to get someplace else because, quite frankly, we are already there.
Our very purpose IS to see our surroundings, to let them envelop us, to experience their silence and quiet, beauty and pristine peace.
The artwork, A Moment to Reflect, invites to slow our pace to an eventual stop and look at where we are. Through the mist, mountain peaks rise, layer upon layer of them. In front of us, the lake water is still, mirroring the clouds overhead. It is so silent, so incredibly peaceful. This, we tell ourselves, is a place of majesty, of real, genuine royalty.
And then, out of the corner of our eye, we perceive another hiker, almost hidden in a patch of sun-kissed grass, in the midst of a camouflage of trees to the right. He also has stopped and is standing very, very still, taking in the moment, absorbing his surroundings and letting their essence enter into his very being.
In a moment, or two, or five, he will move on. But there’s no hurry.
