Description
Country roads invite us to leisurely drive along them.
In the past, when a “traditional” contemporary work schedule was 9 to 5, Monday through Friday, Sunday afternoon was a quiet time of leisure (or should have been; there are always those who insist upon filling every moment with busy work). It was an excellent time to jump in the car and simply drive, viewing the scenery through the windows like scenes in a nature documentary.
Sunday Drive, the artwork, invites the viewer to stop whatever he or she is doing and take such a drive. The road, for now, is straight, heading into the mountains in the distance. It is an overcast day, a bit drizzly, and it feels good to be in the car with the heater on.
The landscape is a country one – coming up is an old fashioned, well preserved, and still actively used red barn, which contrasts beautifully with the green, green grass of the meadows and the fields.
This is a quiet, peaceful place, a rural country scene with the added benefit of being surrounded by high, majestic mountains. These particular mountains are the Wallowas of Oregon, nicknamed the Swiss Alps of North America, and they rise from seemingly nowhere on the high altitude plains. Here, hay is grown during the short growing season, for the cattle and livestock of the area.
Summers are late, spring is short, and storms come out of nowhere. On this Sunday Drive, a storm is brewing, and soon rain will splatter the windshield of the car. It’s not a time to drive fast, because we’re actually in no hurry to get anywhere: this is a Sunday Drive, an opportunity to simply pass through the landscape, looking at the quiet beauty of the trees and grass and farmhouses and mountains, chatting with our companions in the car, and letting our minds wander with the car.
